Bar Stool Buying Guide

We've written this guide to help you answer some of the most common questions about buying bar stools and counter stools. Stools are available in many different styles, finishes, materials, fabrics, sizes, shapes, and prices. This guide is to help you decide which stool is right for you and your surroundings. If you have any questions, feel free to call or e-mail us and we will be glad to help.

What is the difference between bar stools and counter stools?

Most stools come in two common sizes: 30 inch and 24 inch. This measurement is taken from the floor to the bottom of the seat. The 30 inch stool is commonly referred to as a "bar stool" and the 24 inch is a "counter stool". The bar stool size ranges from 29-31 inches and the counter stool size ranges from 24-26 inches. These are the "standard" sizes of stools, but they can be special ordered in sizes from 24 inches to 37 inches tall. Companies such as Holsag Canada and Teena Ironworks will custom make bar stools in any size of your choice.

What size stool should I purchase?

This is always a good question. This can only be answered after we answer another question: what is the height of your bar or kitchen tabletop?

41-43” Tall Bar or Table: Usually accepts a bar stool which is normally 29-31 inches tall.

35-37" Tall Bar or Table: Usually accepts a counter stool which is normally 24-26 inches tall.

Sometimes you will have other variables that affect your buying decision such as: Does the stool have arms? What is the size and height of the person? For this, just measure up from the floor 24 to 30 inches. The difference from there to the bar should determine if there's room for a bar or counter stool.

How many bar stools do I need?

This question can be answered depending on the length of your bar or table. The general rule is to allow 26 to 30 inches between the stools. This measurement is taken from the center of the stool. Leave 14 inches from the wall or edge of your bar or table to the first stool. The optimum spacing between stools is about 26 to 30 inches. With this distance, you are allowed plenty of room for entering and exiting

These bar stools are made by the same quality manufactures as wood bar stools, but they also come from specialty makers like Teena Ironworks from Georgia. They produce steel bar stools as well as custom bar stools, wrought iron bar stools, and iron bar stools with your own motif that is laser-cut right into the back. These sturdy bar stools come in a variety of finishes and styles. The choice between wood bar stools and metal bar stools depends on your own personal taste.

Wood/Metal Bar Stools- If a wood bar stool is not what you're looking for and you can't seem to find a metal bar stool that meets your particular style, you may be interested in the some of the most attractive bar stools available. Wood/Metal Bar stools are classic or contemporary bar stools that have the most unique variations available. Some of the most stylish kitchen bar stools come from this line. These stools mix wood seats, backs, motifs, or trim with elegant metal for some of the best bar stools available. They come in the same styles, colors, finishes, materials, fabrics, and leathers as the other bar stools. They mix classic, contemporary, and traditional styles to form a unique genre of beautiful bar stools. This line features traditional, backless, swivel, and non-swivel bar stools.

Upholstered Bar Stools- Sometimes, the wood, metal or wood/metal bar stools just don't give your home the classic or traditional look and feel it deserves. The upholstered bar stool may be the option for your home. This is a line of bar stools that are hard to find. We carry only the best upholstered bar stools from the largest manufactures in the country. These elegant leather and fabric bar stools come in many different designs and styles. Our line includes leather, hand-stitched fabric, microfiber, suede, faux leather, vinyl, and polyester. Generally, upholstered bar stools are the most comfortable on the market..

Backless Bar Stools- This category of bar stool contains all of the styles and finishes of the other categories with the only difference of having no back. Backless bar stools can be used in many places that a conventional bar stool will not work. Sometimes, the arms of a bar stool will not allow it to fit under the counter or the backs just get in the way. We also offer some backless bar stools with fully adjustable heights. We offer brand name backless bar stools as well as standard bar stools like Ashley Furniture, Hillsdale House, Steve Silver, Holsag, and Teena Ironworks.
